SUMMARY:The Witch Trials in Abiquiu, NM
DESCRIPTION:A little-studied witchcraft trial took place at Abiquiu, New Mexico, between 1756 and 1766. The witchcraft outbreak took place less than a century after the Pueblo Revolt and symbolized a resistance by the Genízaros (hispanicized Indians) of Abiquiu to forced Christianization. The response of the Church and the Spanish government stand in sharp contrast to the pattern set in Salem 150 years earlier. We will examine the unique history of this tiny New Mexico village, the nature of the accusations made and the response of the Spanish colonial governor and the Church.\n
